KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its annual academic awards, with Western Michigan earning the team award and four athletes getting individual recognition.
As a team, the Broncos had a record setting year, earning a team GPA of 3.70. That was a program record.
Sandra Ferrari,
Mabinty Kebe,
Bri'Yanna Robinson and
Kayla Schiera all earned individual honors from the USTFCCCA as well.
In the classroom, Ferrari finished her freshman season with a 3.60 GPA in pre-business. She was just as exceptional as an athlete, winning the indoor 60-meter hurdles MAC Championship, while also earning a bid to the NCAA East Preliminaries.
Kebe was just as strong in the classroom, as she carries a 3.78 cumulative GPA in healthcare services and sciences. Kebe was the MAC Champion in the 400-meter hurdles and made the NCAA East Preliminaries in the event as well.
Robinson finished her senior season with a 3.58 cumulative GPA in exercise science. As an athlete, she was able to post two school records in the shot put, while also making an appearance at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
Schiera closed out her college career by having a 3.68 graduate GPA in exercise science. On the track, she was one of the best in the nation, earning Second Team All-America honors in the 3K Steeplechase. She also won the MAC Championship in the event and holds the school record by more than 30 seconds.
