Kayla Schiera Ready to Compete at NCAA Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Graduate student Kayla Schiera is set to compete at the NCAA Championships on Thursday in Eugene, Ore. Schiera will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which is set for 6:02 p.m. PT on June 6.

The event will have two heats, with the top five from each heat and the next two fastest times advancing to Saturday's NCAA Finals. Schiera had the seventh best time in the nation at the regional meet, finishing the race in a PR time of 9:56.23 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Schiera has been dominant in the event throughout the 2024 season. She holds the school record in the race by more than 30 seconds and was crowned the MAC Champion back in May. She is the only runner from the MAC competing in the event.

At the NCAA Championships, each participating athlete will earn All-American honors. Those placing first through eighth will be named First Team All-American, ninth to 16th will be awarded Second Team All-American status and the rest of the field will be given Honorable Mention recognition. WMU hasn't had an All-American since 2018 and hasn't had a First or Second Team honoree since 2012 (4x400 Relay).
