DEKALB, Ill. -- The Western Michigan track and field team finished fifth at the MAC Championships, which marked the team's best finish since 2014. Along with that, the Broncos had their highest point total since 2012. The Brown and Gold also had two individual champions for the first time since 2019.
On the final day of competition, no one shined brighter than
Mabinty Kebe. She claimed the 400-meter hurdles title with a time of 59.12. She was more than a second faster than the next fastest athlete. She became the Broncos' first champion in the event since Erin Dowd in 2019. Along with her championship, she was also able to grab fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. She earned the Broncos five points with a time of 13.81.
Sandra Ferrari competed alongside Kebe in the 100-meter hurdles and was able to grab second place. She crossed the finish line in a time of 13.57, which was .02 behind the first-place finisher. Ferrari also collected second place in the long jump during Friday's competition.
Four other athletes were able to put points on the board during the final day of competition. In the triple jump,
Anichka Malachi earned a PR mark of 12.16 meters to finish fourth. Throwing wise,
Bri'Yanna Robinson put five points on the board. She finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 46.06 meters.
Tess Van Dyk just missed qualifying for the discus final, posting a mark of 42.92 meters.
Mariah Sackett had a PR throw of 41.65 meters.
In the distance events,
Kayla Schiera and
Danielle Rinn were fabulous. Rinn entered the 1,500-meter run not ranked in the top eight, but she was able to vault all the way to fourth. She finished the race in a time of 4:30.62. Schiera also elevated in the standings, earning fourth place in the 5,000-meter run. She registered a time of 16:49.00. Rinn finished the event in 10th place with a time of 17:11.72.
Relay wise, the 4x100 team was able to grab seventh place with a time of 46.53. WMU's team included Ferrari, Kebe,
Laurie-Ann Desormes and
Soniya Jones. To close out the day, the Broncos finished the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:55.20. The Brown and Gold had a team of
Layla Wallace, Desormes,
Annalise James and Kebe.
