Records Fall in Big Weekend for Track and Field Squad

DURHAM, N.C./ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Soniya Jones and Laurine Elisa Marimon both broke program records in a strong weekend for the Western Michigan track and field team. 

Jones dominated in the 100-meter dash, securing the program's top time of 11.56. That was good for fourth in the event. Marimon took the school's top spot in the triple jump, leaping a top distance of 12.67 meters. That was good enough to win the event. 

Then, the 4x100 relay team showed off its speed, registering the seventh best time in program history. The quartet reached the finish line in a time of 45.85. 

Laurie-Ann Desormes also took part in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 12.20. Then, in the 100-meter hurdles, Sandra Ferrari and Mabinty Kebe produced great times. Ferrari nabbed a 13.89, while Kebe notched a 14.03. Jade Celestine was competing at GVSU in the same event, collecting a time of 14.72. She also took part in the 400-meter hurdles, locking in a time of 1:04.81. 

From there, the 4x400 relay team hit the track. The quartet for the Brown and Gold recorded a time of 3:44.79. Continuing on, Anichka Malachi was great in the triple jump. She posted a top mark of 11.76 meters. In the long jump, Ferrari (6.01 meters), Marimon (5.63 meters) and Malachi (5.46 meters) were among the top performers. Layla Wallace was strong at the Al Owens Classic in the long jump, earning a leap of 5.60 meters. 

Moving to the shot put, Tess Van Dyk flexed her muscles. She had a top mark of 14.19 meters. Lane Hagens wasn't too far behind her, securing a throw of 13.21 meters. Sierra Sommers rounded out the Bronco trio with a mark of 12.84 meters. 

Looking at the hammer throw, Sommers was able to show out. She had a throw of 45.92 meters. To close out the meet, Sommers secured a throw of 43.19 meters and Hagens earned a mark of 40.86 meters in the discus. 

Distance wise, Madison Clor (17:40.93), Shannon Gillahan (18:16.17) and Lauren Sancrant (18:32.93) performed exceptionally in the 5K.

WMU will split up in a couple weeks for meets at GVSU and Louisville.
