KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will close out the regular season with a pair of meets at Grand Valley State and Louisville. The distance group will head to GVSU on Thursday, while the rest of the team will be at the Clark Wood Open in Kentucky on April 26-27.
SCHIERA'S HOT STRETCH
Graduate student
Kayla Schiera has been on fire for the Broncos, netting multiple top times over her last couple of appearances. Last week at the Jesse Owens Classic, Schiera posted the second best 1,500-meter run time in program history. She missed the school record by under half a second. Her time of 4:24.23 is the sixth fastest time in the Mid-American conference this season.
That spectacular performance comes after she shattered the school record in the 3K steeplechase a few weeks ago at the Raleigh Relays. Her time of 10:03.93 is more than 30 seconds faster than the next best time in school history. Furthermore, her time currently sits as the second best time in the MAC and the 18th best time in the nation.
PR PERFORMANCES
In what has become a weekly occurrence, Western Michigan saw a bunch more PR's last weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic. The distance group had a trio of personal-best times coming from
Annalise James,
Lillian Zelasko and
Brooke Soper. James and Zelasko each posted their career-best times in the 5,000-meter run. James finished the race with a time of 4:35.29, while Zelakso recorded a time of 4:39.35. Not to be outdone, Soper was able to notch a PR in the 10,000-meter run. She finished her race with a time of 17:31.98.
HAVING A RECORD YEAR
The Broncos have had an outstanding outdoor season, headlined by eight top-10 times/marks in school history and one school record. Those performances are headlined by
Kayla Schiera's school record time in the 3K steeplechase.
To go along with that, Schiera,
Sandra Ferrari,
Soniya Jones,
Danielle Rinn,
Lillian Zelasko,
Mabinty Kebe,
Anichka Malachi and
Bri'Yanna Robinson have all entered the program's top 10 in various events.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Western Michigan track and field team hasn't just been producing athletic results, as the group posted one of the best team GPA's in the entire athletic department. For the fall semester, the Broncos earned a 3.58 grade-point average, including 11 student athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, 21 members of the team were able to produce a 3.5 GPA or better.
