KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After winning eight events, posting eight PR's and earning one top-10 mark in program history at the Jack Shaw Invitational this past weekend, the Western Michigan track and field team will look to keep up the momentum when it heads to the Jesse Owens Classic on April 19-20.
SCHIERA'S RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE
Kayla Schiera shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase back on March 29 at the Raleigh Relays, posting a time of 10:03.93. Her time is more than 30 seconds faster than the next best time in program history. Furthermore, she currently sits at first in the Mid-American Conference and 13th in the nation with that time. She beat four All Americans from other programs in the event.
For that performance, Schiera was awarded the MAC Track Athlete of the Week award. She is the second Bronco to earn a MAC Weekly Award so far this track season.
ROBINSON ROLLS ALONG
Last weekend at the Jack Shaw Invitational,
Bri'Yanna Robinson continued her tremendous season by earning the sixth best shot put mark in program history. Her throw of 14.56 meters won the event and ranks fourth in the MAC this season. During the indoor season, Robinson placed third at the MAC Indoor Championships in the shot put.
PR PERFORMANCES
During last weekend's Jack Shaw Invitational, plenty of Broncos saw personal-best performances. The meet started with
Delaney Knoll posting a career-best time of 11:42.12 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She won the event and lapped the field in the process. Along with Knoll,
Layla Wallace had a PR of 5.41 meters in the long jump.
Additionally,
Madison Zarembski was able to record a time of 4:51.42 in the 1,500-meter run, which was a career-best time for her.
Laurie-Ann Desormes and
Claira Gilchrist went on to collect PR times of 25.13 and 26.39, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Throws wise,
Tess Van Dyk was able to post two career-best marks between the shot put and discus. She had a throw of 13.59 in the shot put and a mark of 43.71 in the discus. Rounding out the PR marks for WMU was
Kennedy Hagens in the hammer throw. She posted a new-best throw of 43.78 meters.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Western Michigan track and field team hasn't just been producing athletic results, as the group posted one of the best team GPA's in the entire athletic department. For the fall semester, the Broncos earned a 3.58 grade-point average, including 11 student athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, 21 members of the team were able to produce a 3.5 GPA or better.
