KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team heads on the road to end the 2023-24 regular season with the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship in its sights. WMU takes on UIC on Friday at 1 p.m. and then at Northern Illinois on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Broncos and the Huskies are currently tied at the top of the standings with 6-2 records, followed by Toledo at 6-3 and Ball State at 5-3. All four have guaranteed spots in next week's MAC Tournament Championship at Toledo.
THE SCENARIOS
Two wins by Western Michigan will give the Broncos the outright MAC Regular Season Championship, the 29th in program history. After that… it gets a bit crazy. A scenario exists where WMU, NIU, BSU and UT could all tie for the regular season championship with 7-3 records. There can also be a three-way tie and a two-way tie for the championship. The No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament would be decided by tiebreakers.
The Rockets only have one match on the weekend, hosting a winless Buffalo. The Huskies host Ball State on Friday before WMU comes to town on Sunday. The Cardinals play at UIC on Sunday.
REBOUND
Western Michigan had just one match last weekend, defeating Ball State, 5-2, on Friday. WMU avenged a loss to the Cardinals back on March 22 in Muncie, but also rebounded from a 4-3 loss to Toledo the prior week.
The Broncos are 4-1 this season after suffering a loss.
RUNNING THE TABLE
Western Michigan senior
Benjamin George has a chance to go a perfect 10-0 in MAC play. George is currently 8-0 in conference play, with a 2-0 record at No. 1 and a 6-0 record at No. 2. This would mark the second-straight season that a Bronco has been perfect in MAC singles play.
Anton Arzhankin went 10-0 last season and was 2-0 at No. 1 and 8-0 at No. 2.
ON THE HORIZON
WMU knows it will head to the MAC Tournament Championship next weekend in Toledo, but will have to wait for the weekend to shake out before it knows its seed.
