KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Anaheim Ducks have signed right wing
Sam Colangelo to a two-year entry-level contract beginning this season. Colangelo will join the Ducks immediately.
The senior winger was drafted by the Ducks in the second round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He was the No. 36 overall pick, making him one of the highest drafted players to ever play in the Brown and Gold.
Colangelo was sensational for the Broncos, finishing the 2023-24 season with a team leading 24 goals to go along with 19 assists. Both of those totals were career highs. He also led the nation in hat tricks with three. He tallied three goals against Bowling Green, Denver and St. Cloud State this season.
His play throughout the season helped him garner three NCHC Player of the Week honors as well as All-NCHC Honorable Mention status. Furthermore, the Stoneham, Mass. native was a Hobey Baker nominee this season.
He finishes his four-year college career with 97 points on 45 goals and 52 assists. He also ends his college playing days with a +22 rating, including a +19 mark in 38 games during the 2023-24 campaign.
Team wise, Colangelo helped the Broncos to a third straight NCAA Tournament, which had never been done in program history prior to this season. Additionally, Western Michigan has surpassed 20 victories each of the last three years.
"Deciding to enter the transfer portal was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but deciding on Western Michigan was a very easy choice," Colangelo said. "This place means the world to me, helped me fall back in love with the game of hockey and took me places I never imagined. To my teammates, thanks for making this the best year of my life. On and off ice, the memories we made will last a life time. To the coaching staff and the entire behind the scenes staff, thank you for believing in me and allowing me to play my game. Finally, to all the guys going back, enjoy it because you'll blink and it'll be over. I know Bronco hockey has an extremely bright future ahead. My time in Kalamazoo was short, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Thank you all!"
