KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will split up this weekend to compete in a trio of meets. Part of the team will head to North Carolina for the Raleigh Relays, while the rest of the team will split time between the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational. All three meets will begin competition on Thursday, March 28 and conclude on Saturday, March 30.
FERRARI CONTINUES TO SHINE
After earning various awards throughout the indoor season,
Sandra Ferrari continued her strong freshman season to begin the outdoor campaign. At the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational last weekend, Ferrari put on a show, winning the long jump with a mark of 6.08 meters. That leap was good for the third best mark in program history and is the best jump in the MAC so far this season. Ferrari also raced in the 100-meter hurdles, recording a time of 14.48.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES'
Soniya Jones opened the outdoor season with a bang, collecting the ninth best time in program history in the 100-meter dash at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational this past weekend. She posted a time of 11.92 in the event, which currently sits as the third best time in the conference.
KEBE'S STRONG START
Mabinty Kebe had a great start to her outdoor season, grabbing a time of 1:01.07 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational last weekend. So far this season, that time sits atop the Mid-American Conference and is the 55th fastest time in the country.
ROBINSON'S RAVE REVIEWS
Bri'Yanna Robinson has been excellent in her first season with the program, headlined by already having a school record mark in program history. Just a few weeks ago, Robinson broke the program record in the shot put by earning a mark of 16.03 meters. The next best throw in program history is 15.39 meters. She followed that up with a third-place finish at the MAC Championships, earning six points for the team.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Western Michigan track and field team hasn't just been producing athletic results, as the group posted one of the best team GPA's in the entire athletic department. For the fall semester, the Broncos earned a 3.58 grade-point average, including 11 student athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, 21 members of the team were able to produce a 3.5 GPA or better.
