KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will split up this weekend to open the outdoor season. Part of the squad will be at the Miami (OH) Blizzard Buster, while the rest of the team will head south for the Miami (FL) Hurricane Collegiate Invitational. The Blizzard Buster is set for March 22, while competition for the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational is on March 23.
SANDRA'S SENSATIONAL INDOOR SEASON
Though she is just a freshman,
Sandra Ferrari has done nothing but impress in her debut season in the Brown and Gold. During the indoor season, Ferrari claimed the MAC Championship in the 60-meter hurdles and finished second in the long jump. Her long jump mark of 6.19 meters was a school record. For her performance at the MAC Championships, she was named a First Team All-MAC performer and earned the league's Freshman Field Performer of the Year award. She is the first Bronco to receive that award since 2017.
KEBE AND SCHIERA SHINE AT MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mabinty Kebe and
Kayla Schiera were excellent for the Broncos at the Indoor MAC Championships a few weeks ago, with both earning Second Team All-MAC honors. Kebe finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56, while Schiera was able to grab second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.77. Along with Ferrari, this was the first time since 2019 that the Broncos have had three or more All-MAC honorees in one season.
ROBINSON'S RAVE REVIEWS
Bri'Yanna Robinson has been excellent in her first season with the program, headlined by already having a school record mark in program history. Just a few weeks ago, Robinson broke the program record in the shot put by earning a mark of 16.03 meters. The next best throw in program history is 15.39 meters. She followed that up with a third-place finish at the MAC Championships, earning six points for the team.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Western Michigan track and field team hasn't just been producing athletic results, as the group posted one of the best team GPA's in the entire athletic department. For the fall semester, the Broncos earned a 3.58 grade-point average, including 11 student athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, 21 members of the team were able to produce a 3.5 GPA or better.
