OLDSMAR, Fla. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in first place after the opening round of the Butler Don Benbow Spring Invitational, while two Broncos are tied for second, at Ardea Country Club on Monday.
The Broncos combined to shoot a 302 (+14) and hold a five-shot lead over second-place Belmont. WMU combined for a round-best 11 birdies and also had 47 pars.
Sophomores
Megha Vallabhaneni and
Jenna Hayes are tied for second overall after shooting 74's (+2). Graduate student
Alissa Fish is two shots back with a 76 (+4). Leeyen Peralta from Quinnipiac leads the tournament after shooting an even-par 72.
Ally Barth was WMU's fourth finisher on the day, shooting a 78 (+6) and sitting inside the top-20.
Natalie Samdal rounded out the team's top five with an 84.
Fish had a team-best 12 pars in the round, with Hayes just behind her at 11. Hayes, Vallabhaneni,
Ally Barth (competing individually) and Bella Brooks (competing individually) each had three birdies.
The Broncos go for the win on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
