YPSILANTI, Mich. -- After starting strong yesterday afternoon, the Western Michigan track and field team concluded the MAC Indoor Championships this evening with its best team finish since 2019. The Broncos placed sixth with 52 points.
Headlining the final day was
Sandra Ferrari, who became a MAC champion in the 60-meter hurdles. She posted a time of 8.44 to become WMU's first ever champion in the event and earned 10 points for the team. For her performance, Ferrari was named the MAC Freshman Field Performer of the Year.
Mabinty Kebe also tallied eight points for the Brown and Gold in the 60-meter hurdles, getting second place with a time of 8.56.
Later in the meet,
Kayla Schiera continued her strong MAC Championship performance, posting a second-place finish in the 800-meter run. She collected eight points for the Brown and Gold and recorded a time of 2:11.77.
On the throws side,
Bri'Yanna Robinson and
Lane Hagens combined to add nine points to the board in the shot put. Robinson placed third with a throw of 15.48 meters, while Hagens placed sixth with a PR mark of 13.41 meters.
Anichka Malachi followed that up with three points in the triple jump, thanks to a sixth-place finish. She concluded the event with a mark of 11.83 meters.
Soniya Jones then entered the 60-meter dash as the eight seed, but she was able to nab fifth place with a time of 7.50. That helped the Broncos add four points.
The meet concluded with the 3,000-meter run and the 4x400 relay. in the 3,000-meter run,
Lillian Zelasko just missed out on adding more points, as she finished ninth with a PR time of 9:40.48.
Danielle Rinn also competed in the event and registered a time of 9:46.56.
To end the meet, the relay team of Jones,
Laurie-Ann Desormes,
Layla Wallace and Kebe was able to grab ninth place with a time of 3:55.26.
