Track and Field Opens MAC Indoor Championships with Strong Results

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team opened the MAC Indoor Championships with some strong results this afternoon, including a big showing from Sandra Ferrari

Though it was the last event of the night to finish, Ferrari saved some fireworks for the end of the opening day. She helped the Broncos pick up eight points in the long jump by finishing second. Her leap of 6.19 meters was a personal best and broke the school record.

The distance medley relay team of Annalise James, Laurie-Ann Desormes, Kayla Schiera and Danielle Rinn was able to put two points on the board late in the afternoon. The group put up a time of 11:57.19.

Ferrari and Mabinty Kebe had a great day on the track, with the two of them getting the top-two times in the 60-meter hurdle prelims. Both will advance to tomorrow's final. Ferrari finished with a time of 8.54, while Kebe notched a time of 8.65.

Later in the meet, Schiera showed why she's one of the best in the conference, as she nabbed the top time in the 800-meter run prelims. She will compete in the finals tomorrow afternoon after she posted a time of 2:13.61.

Soniya Jones was also great, grabbing a spot in tomorrow's 60-meter dash finals. She finished the prelims with a time of 7.57. Jones also raced in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 25.59.

Throwing wise, Bri'Yanna Robinson made the finals of the weight throw but eventually came up one spot short of the podium. She ended the event with a mark of 16.74 meters. Alongside Robinson, Kennedy Hagens competed in the weight throw, earning a mark of 15.28 meters.

In the middle portion of the meet, Kebe raced in the 400-meter dash, while Desormes and Ferrari raced in the 60-meter dash. Kebe recorded a time of 57.60 in her event before Desormes registered a 7.64 and Ferrari had a time of 7.69 in their event.

Claira Gilchrist was busy throughout the day, as she took part in the pentathlon. Throughout her five events, she was able to earn a score of 2968 to grab 13th place. Her best event was the 800-meter run, where she finished third with a time of 2:29.92.

James also had a good run at reaching tomorrow's one-mile final, but she came up just short. In the end, she was just outside the qualifying line with a time of 5:01.42.

In the 5,000-meter run, Lillian Zelakso just missed adding more points to the board, as she finished ninth with a time of 16:50.61. In the same event, Brooke Soper collected a time of 17:38.71, while Larissa McGrath was able to finish the race in 18:13.29.
