SERIES HISTORY
Western Michigan and Pepperdine have played one series prior to this weekend's meeting, with the Waves sweeping a four-game set from the Broncos to begin the 2013 season. Pepperdine is the only current member of the West Coast Conference that WMU has ever met on the diamond.
OPENING WEEKEND RECAP
The Broncos are coming off of a split of a four-game series against Michigan at Camelback Ranch Stadium in Phoenix last weekend. Western Michigan won each of the first two games in extra innings before the Wolverines bounced back to win the last two. WMU's Opening Day win over U-M was the first Opening Day victory for the Brown and Gold since defeating Utah Valley to begin the 2011 campaign.
SULLIVAN OF SWAT
Cade Sullivan entered the season tied for WMU's career home run record and it did not take him long to break that tie, as he blasted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the 10th inning in Saturday's twin bill opener. It was the 29th of the senior's Western Michigan career, breaking a tie at 28 with former Broncos John Toner (1998-01), Frank Alfieri (1996-99) and Kris Gundrum (1996-99). Sullivan then became the first Bronco to reach 30 home runs on Sunday as he launched his second of the weekend.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
In addition to breaking the home run record,
Cade Sullivan was also named MAC Co-Player of the Week on Monday after going 10-for-16 (.625) with 10 runs scored and six RBIs. He went a combined 8-for-8 and reached base in all 10 of his trips to the plate in Saturday's doubleheader. In the opener of the twin bill he scored five times, tying the program's single-game record. He was the first Bronco to score five times in a game since Joel DeVisser did so against Detroit on April 15, 1998. He was one of just three DI players to score 10+ times on Opening Weekend.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Western Michigan also had the MAC Pitcher of the Week this week as righty
Turner Doran took home the honors. In his Bronco debut in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the junior fired four scoreless innings and racked up seven strikeouts. He allowed just one of the 13 batters he faced to reach base (IBB) and set down the final 10 in order. Doran was the beneficiary of
Cade Sullivan's go-ahead homer in the 10th inning of that contest, as he earned the victory.
DAZZLING DEBUTS
In addition to
Turner Doran's outstanding debut,
CJ Richmond emphatically announced his arrival into the Western Michigan lineup as he went 2-for-4 with three walks and a career-high four RBIs on Opening Day. For the weekend, the Iowa Western transfer hit .357 with a pair of doubles, five walks and six RBIs.
DYLAN'S DAMAGE
Dylan Nevar got off to a hot start last weekend as well, as he went 8-for-17 (.471) with a double, a homer and team-high eight RBIs. The redshirt junior enters the weekend sitting on 97 career RBIs.
GETTING DEFENSIVE
WMU led the MAC with 49 double plays, the most in the league and 27th-most in the country last season. The Broncos picked up right where they left off, turning five double plays during the Opening Weekend series against Michigan. The five double plays were the most turned by any MAC team during the first weekend of the season and are currently 15th-most in the country.
WALK THIS WAY
Opening Weekend saw Western Michigan draw 28 walks, the most in the conference.
CJ Richmond led the way by drawing five free passes, including a career-high three on Opening Day. Six different Broncos drew at least four walks in the four-game series against the Wolverines.
