KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After claiming its second consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship, the Western Michigan women's soccer team was able to land four players on the All-MAC Teams. Along with that,
Jen Blitchok and
Lewis Robinson earned specialty awards.Â
Blitchok was honored as the league's Offensive Player of the Year after producing one of the best seasons in MAC history. She finished conference play with 23 points on eight goals and seven assists. Her 23 points were the most in a single-season since Kidal Vats in 2019. The Grandville, Mich. native scored a point in all but three games, including a pair of hat tricks in wins over Miami and Ball State.Â
Overall, Blitchok's numbers are even more impressive, as she's totaled 38 points on 15 goals and eight assists. She shattered the program single-season records for goals and points and is just four goals and seven points shy of MAC records. Though she has been in the Brown and Gold for just two seasons, Blitchok is knocking on the door of some career program records. She enters the MAC tournament with 62 career points and 24 goals. She is four goals and six points shy of WMU career marks.Â
Robinson joined Blitchok in the specialty awards by earning Coach of the Year honors. In just his third season as the head coach of Western Michigan, Robinson has built the program into a MAC power. The Broncos have gone undefeated in MAC play the last two seasons, becoming the first team in MAC women's soccer history to accomplish that feat. Along with that have been back-to-back MAC Championships, which are the first two regular season titles in program history. Robinson and the rest of the WMU coaching staff helped the team win the league by seven points this season, which is the MAC's largest margin since 2009. WMU was by far and away the best overall team, finishing the year with 26 goals for and only 7 goals against in 11 MAC games.Â
Joining Blitchok on the All-MAC First Team were
Madi Canada and
Heidi Thomasma. Canada played a huge role in the midfield, finishing the MAC season with four points on one goal and two assists. She played nearly 700 minutes for the Broncos in conference play, tallying a goal and an assist against Miami while adding another assist late in the season against Ball State. Overall, Canada has seen over 1100 minutes of action, recording six points on one goal and four assists.Â
Thomasma played nearly every minute for the Broncos in conference play, spearheading one of the best defensive units in the league. WMU gave up just seven goals in 11 games and finished the year with seven clean sheets. Thomasma and the Bronco defense allowed just 32 shots on goal in 11 conference games (2.91 per game). Along with her defensive prowess, Thomasma also joined the offensive action from time to time. She tallied the primary assist on WMU's first goal against Ball State late in the season.Â
Abby Werthman was also strong for the Broncos, as she was the team's lone representative on the All-MAC Second Team. In 11 conference games, the Livonia, Mich. native was able to produce  14 points on six goals and two assists. She finished second in the league in points and goals, averaging 1.27 points per game. Werthman was also big in the clutch, as she tied for the league lead in game-winning goals this season. Overall, her numbers are just as good. In 18 games, Werthman has totaled 23 points on eight goals and seven assists.Â
Along with All-MAC honors,
June Mullen represented the Broncos on the All-Freshman Team. The Omaha, Neb. native was a mainstay in the Bronco lineup, starting all 11 games in the midfield. She helped the Bronco defense hold opponents to just seven goals, while guiding the offense to a 26-goal MAC season. She is the first WMU rookie to make the All-Freshman team since Canada in 2022.Â
Western Michigan has earned the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament and will host the semifinals and finals this upcoming weekend. Semifinal play is on Thursday, Nov. 7, and WMU will play Kent State at 2:30 p.m at the WMU Soccer Complex. Buffalo will square off with Ohio at 11 a.m. The two winners will then battle on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the WMU Soccer Complex. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
