Women's Soccer Travels to Michigan State for NCAA Tournament Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team will be in East Lansing, Mich. tomorrow afternoon to square off with Michigan State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos and Spartans will hit the field at 12 PM at DeMartin Stadium. WMU is the last MAC team to win an NCAA Tournament game.

HOW WE GOT HERE
Western Michigan has dominated opponents throughout the 2024 season, carrying a 13-1-6 overall record into NCAA Tournament play. WMU has outscored its opponents 47-14 this season.

The Broncos haven't dropped a game since falling to Creighton on Aug. 29 in Omaha. The team is currently riding a 16-game unbeaten streak and six game-winning streak.

WMU won both the MAC regular season and tournament titles. The Broncos have gone undefeated in conference play each of the last two seasons.

In the MAC Tournament, Western Michigan continued its dominance. The Brown and Gold outscored opponents 9-1, including a 5-0 triumph in the championship game.

The Broncos enter the NCAA Tournament at No. 20 in the RPI.

GETTING HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME
The Broncos haven't lost a game since Aug. 29 and are currently riding a 16-game unbeaten streak. That run includes six straight wins and two MAC Championships.

In the six-game winning streak, WMU has outscored its opponents 19-5. Four of the six wins have been shutouts. Western Michigan has given up more than one goal just once this season.

JEN LEADS THE WAY
Graduate student Jen Blitchok has been the go-to option all season, as she enters the NCAA Tournament as the nation's leader in points.

On the season, the Grandville, Mich. native has produced 45 points on 17 goals and 11 assists. She recorded goals in a pair of ties against Big Ten foes Iowa and Wisconsin earlier this season.

On her way to earning MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Blitchok tallied 23 points on eight goals and seven assists.

She holds WMU's single-season points and goals record and is the program's career leader in points despite playing in Kalamazoo for only two seasons.

WE ARE NOT WERTHY
Senior Abby Werthman had a dominant performance in the MAC Tournament, finishing the weekend with 10 points on four goals and two assists.

After scoring a goal in the semifinals, Werthman delivered the best single-game performance in MAC Tournament history to secure another championship for the Broncos.

In a 5-0 win over Buffalo, the Livonia, Mich. native contributed on every goal. She broke the MAC Tournament single-game record by delivering three goals and two assists. The performance led to her being named the MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
