KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's tennis wrapped up hosting the Mid-American Conference Indoor Qualifying Event at West Hills Athletic Club with senior Anton Arzhankin winning the Singles A Draw and senior Brogan Pierce and freshman Jack Davison winning the Doubles A Draw.
With the wins, Arzhankin will represent WMU and the MAC at the ITA Conference Masters Championship, beginning Nov. 7 in Rome, Ga. Pierce and Davison will also represent Western Michigan and the MAC as a doubles pairing.
Arzhankin had a bye in the Round of 16 and then advanced to the Semifinals after a 6-4, 6-2 win over UIC's Artem Alekseychuck. In the Semifinals on Saturday he dispatched Northern Illinois' Iker Gaztambide Arastia 6-1, 6-1. In Sunday's final he made quick work of Toledo's Hanamichi Carvajal, 6-1, 6-1.
Pierce and Davison opened the Doubles A Draw on Friday with a 8-6 win over UT's Poonthong Komolpisut and Joshua Mackey. The duo had a tough battle in the Quarterfinals against Buffalo's Cheng Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang, earning an 8-7 (7-4) win to advance to the Semifinals. In Saturday's Semifinals, they defeated UIC's Pedro Franka and Eldin Nokic, 8-5. Sunday's Final was a best of three sets format. Pierce and Davison were pitted against UB's Theodoris Mitsakos and Clement Mainguy. The Bronco pair picked up the first set in a tie-breaker, winning 7-6 (7-3). Pierce and Davison then earned their title with a 6-3 win in the second set.
WMU sophomore Matej Kajzer won the Singles C Draw. He opened the tournament with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory over NIU's Angus Howard. In the Semifinals he dispatched Ball State's Broc Fletcher in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). In Sunday's final he defeated the Flames' Mihailo Savic, bouncing back from an opening set loss to win 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Sophomore Ashton Adesoro and freshman Solomon Dunsirn made the finals of the Doubles B Draw. They had an opening-round bye and then defeated Northern Illinois' Howard and Federico Scotuzzi, 8-6. In the Semifinals they picked up an 8-2 win over BSU'a Fletcher and Petar Petrovic. Buffalo's Snaiders and Malkin got the best of them in the finals, with WMU falling 8-3.
Dunsirn went on to have a strong showing in the Singles F Draw, going 2-1 in a round-robin format.
Western Michigan is back in action this weekend at Notre Dame's annual Bobby Bayliss Invite.
