#12 Men’s Soccer Travels to Detroit Mercy Riding 16 Game In-State Winning Streak

DETROIT, Mich. --  The TopDrawerSoccer #12 Western Michigan University men's soccer team will travel to Michigan's east side to face the Detroit Mercy Titans on Tuesday, October 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM and the game will stream on ESPN+.

Last Time Out / WMU's Unbeaten Streak

The Brown and Gold improved their unbeaten streak to a 35th consecutive game without a loss in their 2-0 win over Green Bay at WMU Soccer Complex on Tuesday, October 15. The win marked WMU's 25th consecutive game in which they limited opponents to one goal or fewer.

Offensively, graduate student midfielder Owen Smith and junior defender Emiel Nieuwhof provided the two goals for WMU.

Christian Shannon Receives National Recognition

Redshirt freshman defender Christian Shannon was tabbed to Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top 100 Freshman list Monday morning and was named the 13th-best freshman in the entire nation. In 14 games played this season (13 starts), Shannon has supplied one goal -- a game-winner, and two assists. Defensively, Shannon has helped the Brown and Gold claim a share of the nation's best goals-against average (minimum 14 games played).

Success Versus In-State Opponents

The Broncos enter the match with a 16-game winning streak over in-state opponents and have not lost to an in-state foe since September 7, 2018. The feat marks the longest win streak against Michigan colleges in NCAA men's soccer history.

Scouting Detroit Mercy

The Titans carry a record of 2-8-3 this season with wins over Eastern Illinois and Milwaukee.  Through 13 games, junior forward Sylvain Gueshom paces the Titans offensively with five goals (one game-winner) and one assist. In the assist department, midfielder Josh Copeland leads the Titans with a career-high four assists.

Series History

The Brown and Gold trail the Titans in the overall series 14-16-4, dating back to 1987. However, the Broncos have dominated the series as of late and have swung momentum in their favor after winning five straight matches over their in-state rivals. During WMU's five-game winning streak over Detroit Mercy, the men's soccer team has outscored the Titans 13-1.
