#14 Men’s Soccer Travels to DeKalb, Faces MVC Foe NIU

DeKalb, Ill. – The #14 Western Michigan University men's soccer team concludes its two-game road trip at Northern Illinois University on Saturday, October 12. Kickoff is scheduled at 4:00 PM ET and the contest will be available on ESPN+.

Last Time Out / WMU's Unbeaten Streak

On Saturday, October 5, the men's soccer team tied Drake University 1-1 and extended its program-record unbeaten streak to a 33rd consecutive game without a loss. In the tie, team captain Landon Fisher tied Owen Crosby (1993-96) for the fourth most games played in a Bronco uniform with his 75th appearance. With WMU's tie against Drake, the Brown and Gold secured a winning record for the 11th straight season.

After conceding a goal in the 13th minute of the first half, the Brown and Gold bounced back with a goal of their own in the closing moments of the 47th minute. Graduate student midfielder Owen Smith ripped a shot 15 yards out and drilled the bar down goal into the back of the Bulldog's net. In the final 45 minutes of the contest, WMU put on a fantastic defensive display and allowed a total of three shots. Defensively, the men's soccer team has showcased consistency throughout the season by limiting opponents to no more than one goal in each of their 12 matches.

Scouting NIU

The Huskies enter the match with a 2-9 record and have lost four straight games overall. As a unit, NIU has allowed an average of 4.25 goals per game during its losing spell, while averaging 0.5 goals per game offensively. Leading the NIU attack is junior Jose Gomez. Through 11 games played this season, the midfielder paces the Huskies with eight points behind two goals and four assists. Against the University of Illinois Chicago on Saturday, September 28, Gomez contributed to both of NIU's points with one goal and an assist. The two scores for the Huskies on Saturday marked NIU's only goals over their past four games.

Series History

Most recently in the series history, WMU has dominated NIU: Since 2012, the Brown and Gold hold an 11-2-3 advantage over the Huskies and enter the match with a four-game unbeaten streak in the series. WMU's offense has erupted during the unbeaten streak, as the team has scored three goals in three of their past four games against the Huskies.
