Track and Field Has Strong Showing at Wolverine Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team had an excellent showing at the Wolverine Invite this afternoon, headlined by multiple school records, top-10 marks and personal bests. 

The highlight of the day was Grace Johnson's performance in the 60-meter hurdle finals, where she shattered the school record. She broke her own school record time by crossing the finish line in a time of 8.37. 

In that same event, Mabinty Kebe and Sandra Ferrari also posted top-10 marks in program history. Kebe's time of 8.65 was good for eighth all-time and Ferrari's time of 8.69 was tied-for-ninth in program history. 

In her WMU debut, Soniya Jones was able to tie the fifth best mark in program history in the 60-meter dash with at time of 7.56. She also had a time of 25.48 in the 200-meter dash. Laurie-Ann Desormes was also terrific in the 200-meter dash, collecting a PR time of 25.74.  

Then, Danielle Rinn was able to notch a PR in the 800-meter run by claiming a time of 2:17.41. She also posted a personal best time of 4:57.03 in the mile. Kayla Schiera was just behind Rinn in the 800-meter run, registering a time of 2:17.54. Asselin also made her college debut in the race, posting a time of 2:25.74. 

Lillian Zelasko and CJ Nixon were another pair of Broncos making their college debuts, as Zelasko crossed the finish line in a time of 5:02.68 in the mile. Nixon followed her by having a time of 5:17.64. 

Brooke Soper and Lauren Sancrant both had PR's in the 3000-meter run, as Soper finished with a time of 10:22.80 and Sancrant had a time of 10:39.80. Madison Zarembski (10:41.58) and Larissa McGrath (10:42.26) came in just after those two. 

Ferrari shattered her personal best mark in the long jump by collecting a mark of 5.76 meters. Layla Wallace and Gilchrist also had PR's in the event, earning marks of 5.39 meters and 5.16 meters, respectively. 

Anichka Malachi and Wallace also competed in the triple jump. Malachi had a mark of 11.52 meters to finish second, while Wallace collected a jump of 10.55 meters to finish eighth. Then, Kebe was strong in her first time running the 300-meter dash, as she recorded a time of 40.21. 

After earning MAC Field Athlete of the Week honors before the new year, Bri'Yanna Robinson followed that up with another good showing in both the weight throw and shot put. In the weight throw, she finished fourth with a mark of 16.69 meters. She then grabbed sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 14.66 meters. 

Lane Hagens and Kennedy Hagens each also had PR's in the weight throw, with Lane posting a throw of 14.99 meters and Kennedy getting a mark of 14.13 meters. 

UP NEXT
The Broncos will compete again next weekend at the Butler Invitational. The meet is set for Jan. 20 in Indianapolis, Ind.
