KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will head to Ann Arbor on Saturday, Jan. 13 to compete at the Wolverine Invite, hosted by the University of Michigan. It will be the second meet of the indoor season for the Broncos.
LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos have been off for over a month, but their last outing at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open was a strong season-opening meet for all involved. Leading the way was
Bri'Yanna Robinson, who posted two top-10 marks in program history in throwing events.
Sandra Ferrari also had a strong meet, making her debut in the Brown and Gold. She posted one of the best long jump marks in the MAC, leaping a distance of 5.47 meters.
ROBINSON'S BIG DEBUT
Bri'Yanna Robinson had a special debut for Western Michigan, earning a pair of top-10 marks in the shot put and weight throw. In the shot put, she now has the fourth-best mark in program history after posting a mark of 14.78 meters. She followed that up with the ninth best weight throw mark in program history with a distance of 17.67 meters.
For that incredible performance, she was awarded the Mid-American Conference Field Athlete of the Week Award. She's the first Bronco to win the award since
Makayla Perez last season and the first member of the team to grab a weekly honor this season.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Western Michigan track and field team hasn't just been producing athletic results, as the group posted one of the best team GPA's in the entire athletic department. For the fall semester, the Broncos earned a 3.58 grade-point average, including 11 student athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, 21 members of the team were able to produce a 3.5 GPA or better.
