KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- On Saturday at 4:00 PM, the Western Michigan men's soccer team will be looking to extend their season best unbeaten streak to six games versus Bowling Green at the WMU Soccer Complex. The match will be streamed on Bronco All-Access and live stats information is available under the men's soccer schedule.
Last time out versus Detroit Mercy, the Brown and Gold tacked on five goals in their shutout win over the Titans. Overall, four Broncos scored including forward Charlie Sharp, who passed Randy Wojtala (1976-79) for the second most goals scored in program history with his two goal outing. The senior from Brighton, Michigan, is now at seven goals for the season and has totaled 30 during his Bronco tenure. Sharp will need five more goals to pass Dan Edwards (1991-94) as the all-time leading scorer for the men's soccer program. Sharp's teammates Dylan Sing, Nick Stone, and Connor Burkett also tallied goals in WMU's third shutout in its last four games. After the Brown and Gold's win over Detroit Mercy, head coach Chad Wiseman became the second coach in program history to eclipse 110 career victories for the Broncos. Wiseman is now 15 wins from sharing the all-time wins record (125 wins) with Blake Glass (1983-1997).
As for Bowling Green, the squad from Ohio enters the contest with a respectable 3-1-2 record, with wins over Cleveland State, Michigan, and Northern Kentucky. The Falcons provide a great test for the Brown and Gold, as 10 players have recorded at least a goal or an assist during the early stages of the season for Bowling Green. The Falcons are led by Kyle Cusimano, Andrew Shaffer, Eli Shope, and Trace Terry. With an average of seven games played amongst the four players, the group has combined for six goals and three assists, with all three helpers credited to Terry. The Falcons are following up on a 2022 campaign where they saw a 6-5-5 record (4-2-2 conference record).
Western Michigan will face a familiar foe in Bowling Green during its first Missouri Valley Conference match of the year. For the 51st time, the Broncos and Falcons will square off in this historic series. The Brown and Gold trail Bowling Green in the all-time series 28-22 but have turned tide in their favor: Over the last 10 matchups, Western Michigan has boasted an unbeaten streak of seven wins and three ties. On Saturday, the Broncos will be looking for their third consecutive win against the Falcons: Last year, on November 2, Western Michigan defeated Bowling Green 2-0 after two second half goals from alum Daniel Nimick (Currently a member of Halifax Wanderers FC).
