Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan softball dropped a non-conference matchup at the University of Michigan Tuesday, falling by a score of 9-1.
Michigan took an early advantage in the first inning with a leadoff homer and triple to push across three runs. The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the second to extend the lead, to 5-0.
The Broncos sought out chances top of the third and stranded a pair of runners on second and third.
Payton Kelly and
Haleigh Smith each tagged singles and advanced on a wild pitch to threaten the Wolverines.
Western Michigan scored its lone run of the contest in the fourth with a set of doubles from
Courtney Farrish and
Haley Boxwell. Farrish's double marked her 13th of the season to rank second in the MAC for doubles per game at 0.27 and 67th nationally.
The Wolverines registered two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the non-conference matchup, 9-1.
Autumn Godwin got the start for Western Michigan and combined with relief pitchers
Rissa Bajusz and
Madysyn Lopez for 4.2 innings of work and seven strikeouts.
U of M tallied nine runs on 10 hits in respect to WMU's one run off of four hits. Western Michigan falls to 16-27 overall as they head into their last weekend of regular season play.
Western Michigan closes Mid-American Conference play at the University of Toledo May 5-6. Game one on Friday is scheduled for a 3 pm start, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 pm.
