KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan senior defenseman
Zak Galambos will return to Kalamazoo for the 2023-24 season. Galambos spent two years at American International College before transferring to Western Michigan prior to last season.
Over the course of his career, Galambos has played in 91 games, tallying 68 points on 20 goals and 48 assists. Over the last two years, he's taken his game to the next level, totaling 58 points on 16 goals and 42 assists. This past season with the Broncos was a great offensive year for Galambos, as he posted 29 points with 11 goals and 18 assists. His 11 goals were the most by a defenseman on the team.
Galambos shined in the team's opening 10 games, posting 11 points on six goals and five assists. Over that 10-game stretch, he had four multi-point games, including a three point effort against top-15 ranked Notre Dame. In that contest, he scored two goals and dished out an assist. Over the entire season, the Walnut Creek, Calif. native had eight multi-point games.
Though it has only been one season, Galambos has shown an ability to step up in big games. Against 11 ranked opponents this past season, Galambos notched nine points on three goals and six assists. He also tallied two game-winning goals throughout the season. Furthermore, during a stretch where the Broncos won 11 of 12 games between December and January, Galambos was able to produce 10 points by scoring two goals and dishing out eight assists.
In just one year with the team, Galambos helped the Broncos continue their upward trajectory. WMU peaked at No. 5 in the national polls this season and won 23 games. The Broncos also made a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, earning a No. 3 seed in the Manchester, NH Region.
"Coming back to Western for another year was a no brainer for me," Galambos said. "I'll get to complete my Masters and I will also be able to continue developing on the ice. We have a really special group of guys and the atmosphere at Lawson is unbeaten. After coming up short this past year in the postseason, we have some unfinished business to tend to."
