COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) announced finalists for individual awards, which will be presented at the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Minn. next week.
Jason Polin,
Ryan McAllister,
Aidan Fulp,
Zak Galambos and
Pat Ferschweiler are the Broncos in the mix for awards.
After an incredible regular season, Polin finds himself in the mix for four awards. The coaches and media tabbed him as a finalist for Player of the Year, Forward of the Year, the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award and Sportsmanship Award. Polin was announced as a First Team All-NCHC pick yesterday afternoon. He has served as the team's captain this season, while posting 45 points on 29 goals and 16 assists. Those 29 goals lead the country, and his next goal will break the NCHC single-season scoring record. As a student, Polin has maintained a 3.70 GPA while being named a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete all four years in Kalamazoo.Â
McAllister had an impressive regular season in his first year in the NCHC, which has led to him being a finalist for the Rookie of the Year Award. He was named to the NCHC All-Rookie team on Monday after finishing the regular season with 45 points on 11 goals and 34 assists. His 34 assists are the most in the nation. Along with his All-Rookie Team honors, he was named Honorable Mention All-NCHC yesterday afternoon.Â
Galambos is in the mix for Offensive Defenseman of the Year, as he has spearheaded a solid defensive core for the Broncos this season. He leads all WMU defenseman in points and goals with 28 and 11, respectively. He's been productive when on the ice, as his +31 mark leads the team. He has connected five times on the power play and has twice scored the game-winning goal.Â
In terms of Defensive Defenseman of the Year, Fulp has been a rock for the WMU defense throughout the season. Along with his 15 points (two goals and 13 assists), Fulp is a +12 and leads the team in blocks with 47. He is also an assistant captain for the team and has helped stabilize a rotating defensive core throughout the season.Â
After guiding the Broncos to their best conference finish in program history, Ferschweiler has been named a finalist for the Herb Brooks Coach of the Year Award. Western Michigan finished second in the conference after entering the season picked to finish in the bottom half of the league. WMU finished the year with 15 conference wins and 44 points, which are both program-high marks. The Broncos have also clinched home ice in the opening round of the NCHC Tournament for the second consecutive season under Ferschweiler's guidance and have a good case to make back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.Â
WMU will host Colorado College this weekend at Lawson Arena. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m., with Saturday's contest starting at 6 p.m. If Sunday is needed, the Tigers and Broncos will square off at 6 p.m.Â
