RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- The Western Michigan golf team sits in a tie for fifth place after the opening round of the 20th annual Rio Verde Invitational at the Rio Verde Country Club on Friday.
Xavier sits in first place after shooting a 293 (+5) and sits three shots ahead of second-place California Baptist. Defending champions Kennesaw State sits at 298 (+10) in third place, with Ball State in fourth at 302 (+14). The Broncos and Butler are tied for fifth at 303 (+15).
CBU's Samantha Dizon is the individual leader after opening with a 70 (-2) and holds a one-shot lead on Emma McMyler from Xavier.
A pair of freshmen paced WMU on the day. Jenna Hayes and Megha Vallabhaneni both shot a 74 (+2) and sit in a seven-way tie for 12th. Alissa Fish is two shots behind the pair at 76 (+4), while Natalie Samdal shot a 79 and Haley Barclay shot an 81 to round out Western Michigan's five.
The second round gets under way at 11:30 a.m. ET.
