KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After a home sweep of Colorado College, the Western Michigan hockey team has moved into the nation's top five. The Broncos defeated the Tigers 4-1 on Friday night and came back to claim a 2-1 victory on Saturday evening. WMU now holds a 21-10-1 overall record.
In both the DCU/USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, the Broncos were able to make a three-spot jump to No. 5. Western jumped over St. Cloud State, Boston University and Penn State this week. The NCHC still holds three of the nation's top 10 teams, with Denver checking in at No. 3 and St. Cloud State coming in at No. 6. Nebraska Omaha was No. 14 in the DCU/USCHO poll and No. 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth were receiving votes between the two sets of rankings.Â
WMU will now gear up for a top-five clash with Denver this weekend. Along with senior day on Saturday, Feb. 25, CBS Sports Network will broadcast the game on Friday, Feb. 24. The Broncos and Pioneers have not seen each other this season and are currently the top-two teams in the conference. A sweep for the Broncos would put them in first place with one series remaining in the regular season.Â
