KANSAS CITY, MO. –The United Soccer Coaches announced its
All-West Region selections Tuesday. This year, Western Michigan led the Missouri Valley Conference with four first team nods and five total selections. Broncos
Jaylen Shannon,
Jonathan Robinson,
Charlie Sharp, and
Dylan Sing earned first team honors, while
Carson Hodgson received a second team nod Wednesday.
Western Michigan set a program record Wednesday with four All-Region First Team members, surpassing last year's previous record of three All-Region First Team nods. This year, Sharp earned his second career All-Region First Team selection, while Shannon, Robinson, and Sing earned their first career All-Region First Team selections. For Hodgson, he earned his first career All-Region Second Team honor.
The defender Shannon recorded a career high three assists during the 2023 campaign. The graduate student defender was also a key leader in WMU's 11 shutouts throughout the season. Shannon would start in all of the Brown and Gold's 22 games this season.
Captain defender Robinson was dominant in the 2023 campaign and led the Broncos with his play and his experienced leadership vocally. This year in 22 starts, the redshirt junior from Gurnee, Illinois tallied a career high 13 assists and tacked in a goal for WMU. Robinson's 13 assists during the 2023 campaign tied for first with Giuliano Teixeira (2003) for the most assists recorded in a single season in WMU history.
As for the program all-time goals king Sharp, he had a phenomenal 2023 campaign, scoring a career high 19 goals in 20 games played (all starts). Sharp would also tie his season best eight assists in 2023. Sharp ended his career with 42 goals and 22 assists, which is first and third all-time in the program's history. Sharp set the program record in goals scored during the 81st minute of WMU's overtime win over Northern Illinois University in the MVC Tournament semifinal on Wednesday, November 8.
The forward Sing concluded his career at WMU with 34 goals and 22 assists which is tied for the second and third most in program history. This year, Sing set the program record for the most consecutive games with a goal scored (eight straight games), which spanned from September 10 - October 11, where he averaged 1.25 goals per contest. Sing set season highs in goals (15) and assists (8) in 22 games played this year.
The midfielder Hodgson had an excellent season by scoring six goals and adding 10 assists during 22 games this year. Hodgson ended the season tied for the third most assists in program history recorded in a single campaign. His six goals and 10 assists marked career bests for the sophomore.
The five student-athletes led Western Michigan to a record-breaking season, including a program-best 20-game unbeaten streak that spanned for three months. The streak began on Sunday, August 27, with a 3-1 win over Utah Valley University and concluded on Sunday, November 26, in the Sweet 16 against Notre Dame. During the streak, the Brown and Gold would win the Missouri Valley Conference outright in their first year in the MVC and were later crowned MVC Tournament champions. This year, WMU would land a Sweet 16 berth, marking the first time in program history that the Broncos would advance to the Sweet 16 in consecutive years. Prior to this season, WMU made appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2017 and 2022.
