Munson Named AVCA Region Coach of the Year; Case Selected All-Region

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a 31-3 season, Western Michigan head coach Colleen Munson has been named the AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, WMU senior setter Logan Case has been selected to the AVCA Midwest All-Region First Team.

The 2023 campaign was an historic one for the Broncos, as Munson's squad compiled a 31-3 record, the program's first 30-win season since 1983. Western Michigan won the MAC Regular Season title after going 18-0 in league play, becoming the first team to go undefeated in conference matches since 2006, and the first to go 18-0 in the MAC since 1993. It was WMU's 10th regular season title and the second under Munson.

As the regular season champion, the Broncos earned the No. 1 seed for the Mid-American Conference Championship, which it hosted for the first time since 2000. After beating No. 5 seed Toledo in the semifinals, WMU outlasted No. 6 seed Bowling Green in the championship match to win its seventh, and Munson's second, MAC Tournament title to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.

Western Michigan entered its MAC-record 13th NCAA Tournament on a 20-match winning streak, its longest since 1983. The Broncos then proceeded to upset No. 7 seed Auburn in straight sets in the first round for their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2008.

Case was named to the Midwest All-Region First Team for the second time in her career after another outstanding season in which she racked up 11 of the 13 MAC West Setter of the Week honors on the way to becoming just the second player in league history to be named both the MAC Player of the Year and Setter of the Year in the same season. The senior also became the first three-time Setter of the Year award winner in conference history and earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team for the fourth year in a row.

A native of Maineville, Ohio, Case collected 1,421 assists this season, the most in NCAA Division I, and is second in the nation in assists per set at 11.94. On Oct. 17 against NIU, she became Western Michigan's all-time leader in career assists, and then became the first Bronco to eclipse 5,000 career assists in the MAC Championship victory over Bowling Green.

Munson and Case now advance to consideration for the AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year and AVCA All-America Teams, respectively. The AVCA is set to announce those honors later this month.
