Hockey Looks to Keep Momentum with Series at Colorado College

THIS WEEK
After collecting a pair of victories at North Dakota last week, Western Michigan will hit the road again for a series against Colorado College. The Broncos and Tigers will square off at 10 PM ET on Jan. 20 before finishing the series on Jan. 21 at 8 PM ET.

The Broncos and Tigers haven't met this season, but the two squads share a 6-5-1 record in NCHC play.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan extended its winning streak to four games with a thrilling, 7-6, victory at North Dakota on Jan. 14.

The Broncos went down 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest, but goals from Cole Gallant and Luke Grainger knotted things up late in the opening period. The Fighting Hawks would tally a goal in the final seconds to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.

UND continued to build on its lead in the second period, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage midway through the second 20 minutes. However, the Broncos were able to rattle off four goals in a row to claim a 6-5 lead with just over five minutes left in the game. Grainger, Chad Hillebrand, Tim Washe and Hugh Larkin provided goals for WMU in the run.

Down the stretch, the Fighting Hawks would add their fourth power-play goal of the night to tie things at 6-6. But it was Carter Berger's goal in front of the net that slammed the door for WMU. Assists went to Grainger and Hillebrand.

GOALS GALORE
Western Michigan has been on an offensive tear over its last four games. The Broncos have lit the lamp 27 times over their four-game winning streak.

The four-game winning streak matches their season-high, which spanned from Oct. 2-14. During that run, Western Michigan tallied 22 goals.

GRAINGER DANGER
Luke Grainger was terrific in the Broncos' last game at North Dakota, becoming the first Bronco to record six points in a game since David Gove accomplished the feat in 2000 against Lake Superior State.

Grainger scored a pair of goals and dished out four assists in the 7-6 victory over the Fighting Hawks on Jan. 14. His fourth assist of the night was a centering pass to Carter Berger, who sent a shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Grainger's two goals also came at big moments, as his first of the contest knotted the game at 2-2 after the Broncos trailed 2-0 in the first period. His second goal got WMU back on track after falling behind 5-2 in the second period. His power-play goal started a run of four-straight goals for the Broncos.

On the season, Grainger has recorded nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points, which ranks No. 13 in the country. The Broncos have four players in the top-13 in scoring this season, including three with 30 or more points. No other team has more than one player with 30-plus points this season.

LATE GAME LIGHTS OUT
Western Michigan is the top scoring team in the country, and a big reason for that has been the Broncos' play in the third period.

WMU has outscored opponents 41-14 in third periods this season, with the most recent scoring outburst coming at North Dakota last Saturday. The Broncos trailed the Fighting Hawks, 5-4, heading into the final 20 minutes. That lead was eradicated, with WMU recording three third-period goals to claim a 7-6 victory.

THE COLORADO COLLEGE TIGERS | 10-11-1 Overall, 6-5-1 NCHC
- THE SERIES: Western Michigan leads the all-time series 18-8-6, but the two teams have yet to play this season. WMU earned a pair of victories against the Tigers last season.

- SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Despite a losing record overall, Colorado College has done well enough in league play to sit among the top four teams in the NCHC. The Broncos and Tigers have the same league record, but CC was able to collect a shootout victory over Miami (OH) to earn one extra point in the league standings.

The Tigers are coming off of a road split against top-five St. Cloud State in what was the first of three straight series against top-10 opponents. CC hosts WMU this weekend and travels to Denver the following week.

Hunter McKown leads the team in goals, having lit the lamp 14 times this season. He has also chipped in five assists. Bryan Yoon is the team's assist leader, collecting 13 in 22 games.

As a team, the Tigers are middle of the pack in just about every statistical category, but one thing they excel at is staying out of the box. CC has the least amount of penalty minutes in the league this season. Another reason of the Tigers' success has been the ability to kill off opponents' limited power play opportunities. They lead the league with an 82.2 percent (60/73) penalty-killing percentage.

ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan hasn't had a home game since a weekend series against North Dakota back on Dec. 9-10. The Broncos will return home for a pair of games against Omaha on Jan. 27-28.
