KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team has announced the first two of its annual team awards for the 2021-22 season, with Ronnie Attard winning the Bill Saunders Plus/Minus Award and Michael Joyaux winning the Catherine Lawson Sportsmanship Award.
Attard finished the season with a plus/minus of +20 to lead the way for the Broncos. The White Lake, Mich., also logged the most minutes by a defenseman on the team, en route to earning the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Best Offensive Defenseman award for the second straight season. He had a career-high 36 points on 13 goals and 23 assists and was also named an American Hockey Coaches Association West First Team All-American.
Joyaux had just seven penalties on the season for 25 minutes while playing in all 39 games. The senior defenseman had a career-best 32 points on eight goals and 24 assists. Four of Joyaux's goals came on the power play. He also had a team-best 52 blocks for the year.
On Wednesday the Broncos will announce the team's Most Improved Player award and the Vic Vanderberg Top Scorer award.
