KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball program and head coach
Dwayne Stephens have announced the signing of Tray Maddox Jr., a transfer guard from Cal State Fullerton. Maddox is set to join the freshman quartet of Max Burton (Williamston, Mich.), JaVaughn Hannah (Mount Clemens, Mich.), Seth Hubbard (Jonesboro, Ga.) and Jefferson Monegro (LaSalle, Quebec) as the newcomers for the Broncos in 2022-23.
"Tray is a huge addition to our program," Coach Stephens said. "He is a proven player who has played in big games, most recently playing in the NCAA Tournament. He brings a lot to the table. He is super-competitive and has the ability shoot the basketball at a high level. Being from the state of Michigan, we are excited Tray is joining the Bronco family."
Maddox arrives in Kalamazoo after spending the prior two seasons at Cal State Fullerton. This past season, he played in 30 games and started nine for the Titans. Maddox averaged 9.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game while helping Fullerton win the Big West Conference Tournament and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.
During the 2020-21 campaign, Maddox started 15 of the 16 games he played in, and led the Titans in scoring at 15.9 points per game on the way to All-Big West Second Team honors. He connected on three-pointers at a conference-leading 40.6 percent, and hit a league-best 2.6 triples per game.
A native of Novi, Mich., Maddox began his collegiate career at Oakland University. In two seasons with the Golden Grizzlies, he appeared in a total of 63 games and made 51 starts for OU. As a sophomore, he averaged 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest while connecting on a team-high 34.5 percent from beyond the arc. Maddox averaged 6.7 points and 2.4 rebounds as a freshman at Oakland, and upped his averages to 7.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in Horizon League play.
Prior to his collegiate career, Maddox starred at Novi High School. During his high school career, he was an All-State and All-District selection, as well as a two-time All-Area, All-Conference and All-Metro Detroit honoree. As a junior, Maddox led the Wildcats to both league and district titles.
Other prep highlights included a 41-point game, and a game-winning buzzer-beater to help Novi defeat Belleville, 75-73, in the MHSAA boys' basketball Class A quarterfinals at Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall. He was also a standout wide receiver and defensive back in high school, and received offers to play at Syracuse, Ball State and Kent State before ultimately deciding to play basketball collegiately.
