ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 4-0, at fifth-seeded Michigan on Friday afternoon at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took a quick 1-0 lead for the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 by Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney over
Fynn Lohse and
Joaquin Caballer. The Maize & Blue clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 by Andrew Fenty and Nico Ehrenschneider over
Peter Kuszynski and
Anton Arzhankin. The No. 3 match of WMU's
Brogan Pierce and
Ferdinand Schlueter and U of M's Ondrej Styler and Jacob Bickersteth went unfinished with a score of 5-4 in favor of Michigan.
Michigan pushed its lead to 2-0 with Fenty defeating Lohse at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3. The Wolverines pushed the lead to 3-0 with Styler's win at No. 1 over Kuszynski 6-3, 6-3, before sealing the match victory at No. 2 by Maloney over Arzhankin 6-3, 6-2.
Arjun Honnappa's match at No. 4 against Bickestein went unfinished 3-6, 2-4. Also unfinished was the matches at No. 6 with Pierce and Beaty, with Beaty leading 6-0, 6-6 and at no. 5 between
Benjamin George and Ehrenschneider, with Michigan leading 7-5, 1-3.
