COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan head hockey coach Pat Ferschweiler has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team, announced by USA Hockey on Tuesday.
Ferschweiler will serve under Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold, who has been tabbed to lead USA in the tournament.
"I am honored and humbled by the chance to represent our country at the World Junior Tournament," said Ferschweiler. "I would like to thank USA Hockey and head coach Rand Pecknold for this incredible opportunity."
The 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship will take place Dec. 26, 2022 – Jan. 5, 2023. The location is expected to be announced later this month by the IIHF.
In his first season at the helm of WMU, Ferschweiler coached the Broncos to a third place finish in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, the program's first trip to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship Game, the program's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and the first NCAA Tournament win in program history. Ferschweiler was also a finalist for the Herb Brooks NCAA Coach of the Year Award.
This will be the fourth time that Ferschweiler has represented the United States as a coach. He was the head coach of the U.S. Under-18 National Team for the Five Nations cup in 2018, an assistant coach for the U.S Under-18 Select team for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2019 and then was the head coach of the squad for the 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
