MADISON, Wis. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a hard-fought 4-3 loss at No. 63 Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos (4-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. The Badgers won at No. 1 but WMU responded with wins at No. 3 and then No. 2 to take the point. Sophomore duo
Benjamin George and
Brogan Pierce took down Jared Pratt and Daniel Nuzhny at No. 3, 6-3, to tie it up at 1-1. Sophomore
Joaquin Caballer and
Peter Kuszynski then put Western Michigan over the top with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Tim Dzhurinskiy and Lenard Soha.
Wisconsin tied it up at 1-1 with Gabriel Huber downing
Fynn Lohse at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2. Pierce took the lead back for the Broncos with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 4 over Robin Parts. Kusznyski pushed WMU's lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 1 over Pratt 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Soha cut the lead to 3-2 after beating
Anton Arzhankin 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 before Dzurinskiy tied the match at 3-3 after defeating Boone at No. 6 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. The match came down to No. 5 and Wisconsin's Sebastian Vile and WMU's George. George took the first set 6-3 but Vile responded with a 6-3 win of his own. Vile then took the set and the match for the Badgers in the third with a 6-2 victory.
Western Michigan opens Mid-American Conference next Friday, hosting Ball State at 2 p.m. The Broncos then welcome Toledo on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match. Admission is free.
