KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team begins its quest for the program's 27th Mid-American Conference Championship on Friday, hosting Ball State on Friday at 2 p.m. and Toledo on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Friday's match against the Cardinals will be played indoors at West Hills Athletic Club. Sunday's match against the Rockets could be played outdoors at Sorensen Courts if weather permits. An announcement will be made closer to match date on Twitter at @WMUMensTennis.
NON-CONFERENCE RECAP
Western Michigan finished its non-conference portion of the dual match season with a 4-6 record. The Broncos were a perfect 3-0 at home, picking up wins over Butler, Ferris State and Michigan. WMU had a tough road schedule, posting losses at No. 17 Michigan, Notre Dame, Drake and No. 63 Wisconsin. The Broncos also dropped pair of matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend to Memphis and Old Dominion. Western Michigan did win a neutral site match at Drake over No. 55 Wichita State.
Sophomore Brogan Pierce emerged with from non-conference play with the top singles record, going 5-3, with a 1-0 record at No. 4, 2-1 record at No. 5 and a 2-2 record at No. 6. Senior captain Peter Kuszynski also posted five wins, going 5-5 with a 4-5 record at No. 1 and a 1-0 record at No. 2. Pierce and classmate Benjamin George went 3-0 in doubles, while Arjun Honnappa and Fynn Lohse went 5-4, all at No. 1. Honnappa and Lohse rose to the ITA Doubles Ranking of No. 54.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State went 5-5 in non-conference dual matches and return its three All-MAC selections from last season in first team selections Danilo Kovacevic and Thibault de Negri and second team selection Chris Adams. de Negri and Kovacevic have split time at No. 1 with de Negri going 0-4 and Kovacevic at 1-5. Kovacevic has posted a 4-0 record at No. 2, while de Negri is 4-2. de Negri has paired up with Eli Herran to post six wins in doubles, going 6-3 all at No. 2. Kovacevic and Chris Adams are 5-2 at No. 1.
SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
Toledo opens MAC play at Northern Illinois on Friday before heading to Kalamazoo on Sunday. The Rockets are 7-5 in dual matches this season and return Second Team All-MAC selection Krzyszstof Wetoszka, who has posted a 6-6 record in singles with a 4-6 mark at No. 3 and a 2-0 record at No. 4. Sophomore Pawit Sornlaksup has a team-best record of 10-2, all coming at No. 1. He has been paired with Marko Galic in doubles at No. 1, posting a 7-2 record so far. Luka Jankovic and Adam Kovac also have seven wins in doubles action, going 7-1 with a 2-1 record at No. 2 and a 5-0 mark at No. 3.
ON THE HORIZON
WMU heads on the road for the first time in MAC play next week, heading to take on Buffalo on Friday at 1 p.m. The Broncos then head to Binghamton for a 6 p.m. match and stop at Cornell for a non-conference match with the Big Red at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
