Golf Upsets Toledo, Falls to NIU on First Day of Mid-American Match Play Challenge

BRADENTON, Fla. – The Western Michigan golf team went 1-1 in the opening two rounds of Mid-American Match Play Challenge at Lakewood Ranch Golf Club on Monday.

WMU opened the tournament as the 10 seed and upset seven-seeded Toledo 3-2-0. Freshman Ally Barth, senior Brooke Gibbons and junior Alissa Fish each earned the wins for the Broncos. Barth finished 2&1 against Cameron Ford. Gibbons defeated Cheryl Hong 6&5 and Fish earned the win over Amelia Lee 4&3.

In the afternoon the Broncos took on No. 2 seeded Northern Illinois, falling 4-0-1. Gibbons earned the tie against NIU's Ke-Ai Liu.

Western Michigan opens up Tuesday's final day of competition against host Bowling Green, beginning at 7:50.
