KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan head football coach
Tim Lester has announced the hiring of WMU football alum Donald Celiscar to the staff as cornerbacks coach.
Celiscar comes back to Kalamazoo after spending last season at Division II Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio as the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He previously spent one season at Montana State as defensive backs coach.
Prior to his time in Montana, Celiscar spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Minnesota. During his tenure with the Gophers, he mentored unanimous All-American, Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and second-round draft pick Antoine Winfield Jr. Minnesota ended the 2019 season ranked second in the Big Ten in interceptions (14), and went from No. 51 nationally in passing defense (212.4) in 2018, to No. 9 (184.2) in 2019.
Celiscar started 40 games and played in 48 games for the Broncos as a defensive back from 2011-2014. He finished his career at WMU with 10 interceptions, 45 pass breakups and 247 tackles. As a senior, Celiscar led the nation in passes defended per game (1.6), and had four interceptions and 17 pass breakups and earned All-MAC First Team honors. He was named All-MAC Second Team in 2013, and All-MAC Third Team in 2012.
He earned his degree in recreation with a minor in general business at WMU, participated in the 2015 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, and was invited to the NFL Combine. Celiscar spent time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, and was in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
