RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- The Western Michigan golf team wrapped up the opening round of the 19th annual Rio Verde Invitational on Friday at the Rio Verde Country Club's White Wing Golf Course.
Kennesaw State, coached by WMU golf alum Erin Thorne, leads the tournament after the first 18 holes, combining to shoot a 286 (-2). Xavier sits in second place at 291 (+3), followed by Missouri State in third and Cal Baptist in fourth. The Broncos combined to shoot a 322 (+23) and sit in 16th.
KSU's Bella Kil is the induvial leader after shooting a 66 (-6).
Freshman Ally Barth was WMU's top finisher on the day, shooting a 78 (+6) and sits in an eight-way tie for 40th. Senior Brooke Gibbons sits two strokes behind her after an 80, followed by Alissa Fish with an 81 and Imogen Courtney with an 83. Fiona Khaing rounded out the field for the Broncos with an 85.
Senior Cameryn Lucia and freshman Madeline Blum competed as individuals, with Lucia shooting an 81.
