COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan hockey's Max Sasson and Brandon Bussi both earned National Collegiate Hockey Conference weekly honors for their contributions in WMU's sweep of No. 10 North Dakota over the weekend.
Sasson has been named the Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week, while Bussi earns Co-Bauer NCHC Goalie of the Week.
Sasson had three points on the weekend, setting up the Broncos' first and last goals in Friday's 4-1 win over the Fighting Hawks. On Saturday he netted his fourth goal of the season, pouncing on a pass during a UND power play and skating in for the short-handed goal to put WMU up 1-0 late in the first period. Thanks to Western Michigan's defensive effort, the goal held for the game-winner. Sasson finished +2 on the weekend and had four total shots on goal.
Bussi made 34 saves in Friday's victory, allowing just one five-on-five goal and holding North Dakota scoreless on three power plays. On Saturday he made 24 saves in the 2-0 win to records his thirds shutout of the season and his career. Bussi posted a .983 save percentage on the weekend and helped the penalty kill go a perfect six-for-six.
Western Michigan heads on the road to take on No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday and Saturday at 8:07 p.m. It is the first of three straight road trips for the Broncos, who return home to host No. 5 Denver on Feb. 18-19.
