ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season, falling at No. 17 Michigan, 6-1, on Friday evening.
The Broncos gave the Wolverines all they could handle in doubles action. Junior Arjun Honnappa and senior Fynn Lohse nearly the 43rd-ranked duo of Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider to tie breakers, falling 7-5. Ferdinand Schlueter and Anton Arzhankin fell to Gavin Young and Patron Hanchaikul 6-3 to secure the point for Michigan. Peter Kuszynski and Joaquin Caballer's match with Patrick Maloney and Will Crooksey at No. 2 went unfished with the match tied up at 6-6.
Kuszynski was Western Michigan's lone winner in singles action, defeating Fenty at No. 1 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Arzhankin fell to Maloney 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, Lohse lost to 67th-ranked Jacob Bickerseth 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, and 43rd-ranked Gavin Young defeated WMU's Benjamin George at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. Jackson Boon fell short to Ehrenschneider at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Brogan Pierce fell to Will Cooksey in a tie-breaker set 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 9-11.
Western Michigan heads to the University of Tennessee next weekend for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend. WMU opens against Memphis on Friday at 6 p.m. The Broncos will then take on either Old Dominion or the host Volunteers on Saturday at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.
