This is the first meeting between Western Michigan and San Jose State University. WMU has never beaten a team from the Mountain West Conference.

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE (2-1, 0-0 MWC)
San Jose State enters the weekend with a 2-1 record after a season-opening win against Southern Utah, a loss at No. 15/14 USC and a win at Hawaii last Saturday. The Spartans are the reigning Mountain West champions, going 7-1 last season and defeating Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game.
SJSU averages 403.3 yards per game and are led primarily through the air by senior quarterback Nick Starkel. Starkel has thrown for 702 yards in three games, completing 40-for-73 passes (54.8 percent) with six touchdown passes and four interceptions. Isaiah Hamilton leads the team with 168 receiving yards on 12 catches. Tyler Nevens leads the rushing attack that averages 85.7 yards per game, with 149 total on the season on 27 carries.
The defense is averaging 19.0 points allowed per game this season and 403 yards per game. Senior middle linebacker leads the team with 24 tackles. Safety Jay Lenard has a team-high two sacks on the season. The Spartans have yet to intercept a pass but have forced two fumbles on the season.
CAREER DAYS
Wide receivers
Corey Crooms and
Skyy Moore both had career highs in the win over Pittsburgh. Crooms had eight receptions for 161 yards, both career-best marks. Moore had a career-high 11 receptions to go with 124 yards.
With his career day, Crooms now has new career marks for the season. He has 18 receptions for 279 yards and two touchdowns through three games.
INTO THE FIRE

Jack Salopek unexpectedly made his collegiate debut in the win against the Panthers. Redshirt sophomore quarterback
Kaleb Eleby was receiving treatment in the locker room during half time and was unable to come back out for WMU's openeing series. Salopek came in and led the Broncos in a drive into Panther territory, going three-for-three for 20 yards before Eleby came back in.
ONE-TWO PUNCH
Western Michigan's one-two punch of sophomore
Sean Tyler and
La'Darius Jefferson combined for 162 yards on 36 carries and two touchdowns. Tyler had a game-high 84 yards, including a 34-yard run at the end of the game that sealed the win. Jefferson had 78 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.
The duo has combined for 439 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
