KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team opens the 2021-22 season traveling to Youngstown State for the Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Park Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
WMU will tackle Mill Creek's North Course that measures out to 6,088 yards and plays as a par 72. Western Michigan is one of 13 teams competing in the 36-hole tournament. Monday's action starts at 8 a.m. with Tuesday's final round beginning at 9 a.m. The tournament is named after former YSU women's head golf coach Roseann Schwartz, who coached the program from 1996-2013.
The Broncos enter their second season, but first full one, under head coach
Kim Moore. Moore was named head coach prior to the start of the COVID-19-shortened 2021 Spring season. WMU competed in just five meets last season but the Broncos saw their scores improve throughout the season.Â
Senior
Cameryn Lucia returns for a fifth year thanks to the NCAA COVID exception. WMU also has seniors in
Fiona Khaing,
Brooke Gibbons and
Imogen Courtney. Gibbons was WMU's top golfer last season, posting a career-low average of 78.42, while Lucia posted two top-15 finishes on the season.
The Broncos welcome sophomore transfer
Haley Barclay and freshman
Madeline Blum. Barclay comes to WMU from the University of Memphis. Blum was a three-time All-State selection at Marysville High School. The Port Huron, Mich., native was also a four-time team MVP and a two-time Top-10 state qualifier.
Western Michigan's eight golfers gives Moore plenty of competition to pick her lineups for the season. It's the largest roster the Broncos have had since the 2015-16 season when they fielded nine golfers.
WMU heads to Ball State next Monday and Tuesday for the annual Cardinal Classic.
