COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan hockey alum Matt Tennyson has been selected to represent the United States at the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championships May 21-June 6 in Riga, Latvia.
Â
Tennyson spent the season with the New Jersey Devils, appearing in 21 games and scoring one goal and two assists. He has appeared in 165 career NHL games in eight seasons and has played in 305 games in the AHL in his career.
Â
This is the defenseman's first time competing at the IIHF World Championships. He joins other former Broncos Danny DeKesyer (USA),
Frederik Tiffels (Germany) and Oliwer Kaski (Finland) to compete in the tournament in recent years. Both Tiffels and Kaski will play for their respective countries again this year. Kaski looks to help Finland defend its title from 2019.
Â
Tennyson played for the Broncos for three seasons from 2009-2012 before signing with the San Jose Sharks. With WMU he helped lead the program's turnaround, winning a Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Championship in 2012 and playing in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. He played in 117 career games in the Brown & Gold, netting 22 goals and tallying 32 assists and earned Second Team All-CCHA honors for the 2011-12 season.
