KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team heads to Buffalo to take on the Bulls on Friday at 12 p.m.
WMU was also originally scheduled to travel to Binghamton on Sunday but that match has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Cougars' program.
Western Michigan sits alone at the top of the Mid-American Conference standings with a 5-0 record. The Broncos are being chased by Northern Illinois at 4-1 and Ball State at 3-2. Toledo sits in fourth place with a 2-3 record, followed by Buffalo at 1-4 and Binghamton at 0-5. The Broncos are 16-1 overall this season, with the lone stumble coming at Notre Dame.
MOVIN' ON UP
WMU entered last week as No. 50 in the Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings and has moved up to 41 this week. A big reason for the jump was WMU's 6-1 road win at No. 44 Northern Illinois last Friday. The Broncos also stayed hot with a 7-0 win over Butler.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo enters Friday's showdown on a four-match slide. After winning at Binghamton, UB has lost at NIU, at WMU, at home against Toledo and at home against Ball State.
Simon Wibler has a team-high six wins in singles, going 6-2 overall with a 4-2 record at No. 5 and 2-0 at No. 6. Bjoern Petersen is 4-4 on the season, all at No. 1. Tom Owen and Finn Macnamara are 3-2 at No. 3 doubles and have bene paired together the most this season.
ON THE HORIZON
WMU returns home next weekend to host three matches in three straight days. The Broncos host Ball State on Friday at 2 p.m., welcome Omaha on Saturday at 12 p.m. and then host the Rockets on Sunday at 2 p.m.
