WMU Readies for Road Match-Up with Toledo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – With just over a month remaining in the 2021 season the Western Michigan baseball team hits the road during Mid-American Conference play for a four-game series at Toledo, April 30 – May 2.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan enters the weekend with an overall record of 13-17 and MAC record of 12-8. The Broncos have split or won each of their last four conference series
including a split at home against Bowling Green last weekend.

Potent Offense
Western Michigan ranks third in the MAC with a .274 batting average. The Broncos rank second in the MAC in both on-base percentage (.376) and slugging percentage (.421).

Two is Better than One
WMU ranks second in the MAC with 60 doubles and 33rd in the NCAA in doubles per game (2.00).

Charping Around
Junior Connor Charping leads the Broncos in batting average (.355), runs scored (23), total bases (50), on-base percentage (.453) and stolen bases (14).

300-Club
The trio of Connor Charping, Will Morrison and Sean O'Keefe are each hitting over .300 this season.  The trio has combined to score 55 runs on 98 hits with 21 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 48 RBIs.

The Crafty Veteran
Senior RHP Will Mullen out of the bullpen has posted a 4-0 record with a 2.38 ERA in 34 innings of work this season. Mullen's 2.38 ERA is the fourth lowest in the MAC.

Consistent Winning
WMU has recorded at least 20 wins in four of the past six seasons. WMU has also clinched double-digit MAC wins in eight of the last nine years including this season. WMU's 12 MAC wins this season is the most for the Broncos since 2018. WMU is three conference wins away from having the most MAC wins in a season under head coach Billy Gernon and the most since registering 16 back in 2006.

On the Hudson
Entering the weekend redshirt junior Logan Hudson has reached base safely in nine straight games.

Scouting the Rockets
Toledo enters the weekend having won six straight contests and has an overall record of 13-20 and 11-9 in MAC play. The Rockets have won back-to-back series taking three of four from Kent State and sweeping Akron.

Offensively Toledo has recorded a .276 batting average and has scored 202 runs on 299 hits. Leading the way at the plate is Chris Meyers who leads the Rockets in batting average (.383), runs (31), doubles (13), home runs (12) and RBIs (37). As a team Toledo has four players hitting over .300.

On the mound the Rockets have a 6.99 ERA with opponents registering a .306 batting average. RHP Layne Schnitz-Paxton leads Toledo with a 4-0 record in nine appearances this season. Schnitz-Paxton has a 3.77 ERA in 43.0 innings of work and has two complete games in five starts with one save.
