Rachel Bontrager, a senior outside hitter on the Western Michigan Volleyball team has been recognized as an Honorable Mention All-American by
VolleyballMag.com, as announced by the publication on Wednesday.
Last week Bontrager became the sixth player in school history to earn AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors and the first since Lise Martin back in 1987. Bontrager was also named to the AVCA Midwest All-Region team, becoming just the fourth player in school history to do so.
Bontrager became the first Bronco since 2000 to win Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after leading the MAC with 4.62 kills per set. The senior outside hitter was also named First Team All-MAC for the third year in a row after leading the conference in points per set and ranking ninth in hitting percentage.
In her four years at Western Michigan Bontrager has amassed 1,656 career kills, the second most in school history. The Valparaiso, Ind., native also collected 1,065 career digs, the tenth most in program history. Bontrager is the only player in school history to have 1,600 career kills and 1,000 career digs.
Bontrager's career 3.82 kills per set is the best mark in program history while her 4,547 attack attempts are second most in school history. Bontrager's 44 double-doubles (digs & kills) are the third most in WMU volleyball history.
During her senior campaign Bontrager posted double-digit kills in 22 of WMU's 23 matches including the final 20 matches. Highlighting her senior campaign was a career-high 30 kills in a five-set victory over Buffalo on March 4. For her performance
Bontrager became the first player since 2005 to eclipse 30 kills in a match for the Brown & Gold.
