Bontrager, Case Collect AVCA Midwest Region Honors

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its Midwest All-Region honors on Tuesday with Western Michigan volleyball senior outside hitter Rachel Bontrager earning AVCA Midwest All-Region while freshman setter Logan Case was named Midwest All-Region Honorable Mention.

Bontrager becomes the first player since Kim Lee in 1992 to be named to the AVCA Midwest All-Region team and just the fourth player in school history to earn all-region honors. Case also became the fourth player in program history to earn AVCA Midwest All-Region Honorable Mention.

Bontrager during her senior campaign led the conference with 4.62 kills per set en route to being named MAC Player of the Year. Bontrager was also named First Team All-MAC for the third year in a row. The Valparaiso, Ind., native ended the season ranking first in the MAC in points per set (5.01) and ninth in hitting percentage (.319).

The senior outside hitter ended the season having recorded 20 straight matches with double-digit kills and had double-digit kills in 22 of the 23 matches this season. Bontrager ends her career with 1,656 kills, the second most in school history to go along with 1,065 digs which is tenth most. Bontrager is the only player in school history to have 1,600 career kills and 1,000 career digs.

The Valparaiso, Ind., native is all over the WMU record books ending her career with 3.82 career kills per set, the best mark in school history. Bontrager's 4,547 attack attempts are second most in school history while her 44 double-doubles (digs & kills) is the third most in program history.

Case earned AVCA Midwest All-Region Honorable Mention after ending the season leading the MAC and the NCAA with 12.27 assists per set. For her performance Case was named MAC Setter and Freshman of the Year. Case's 1,018 total assists also led the MAC and ranked second in the nation.

The Maineville, Ohio native ranked second on the team with eight double-doubles and had 10 matches this season with at least 50 assists. Case had double-digit assists in every match this season and had over 40 assists in 16 of the 23 matches.

Helping guide WMU to the MAC Tournament Championship match, Case earned MAC All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 13.25 assists per set against Ohio and Bowling Green. Case's 12.27 assists per set during her freshman campaign is the seventh most in a single-season in school history.
