Men's Soccer Wraps Up Regular Season With Home and Home Against Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team wraps up the 2020-21 regular season this week with a pair of games against Akron. WMU travels to UA for a game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and then hosts the Zips on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Wednesday's game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and Sunday's can be watched live on ESPN3.

WMU is coming off a 2-1 win over Bowling Green last Wednesday. The victory over the Falcons keeps the Broncos in the hunt for the Mid-American Conference regular season title, which gives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament this season. The standings will be decided by points per game due to BGSU and UA having to shut down due to COVID for two weeks and not all games will be made up.  Bowling Green sits at 4-2, with WMU and West Virginia at 4-3. Akron has a 3-3 record in conference play, while NIU is 4-5 and SIU Edwardsville is 2-5.

SCOUTING THE ZIPS
Akron holds a 35-4-4 lead in the all-time series. The last meeting between the two came back on Oct. 20, 2019 and finished in a 1-1 tie. WMU's last win over the Zips was on Oct. 7, 2017 and the last road win was Oct. 25, 2014.

The Zips paused all activities after their March 17 win at SIUE and resumed play on April 4 with a 3-1 loss against Northern Illinois. UA's last two games have both gone to overtime, with a 3-2 win in double overtime over WVU and a 1-0 loss in overtime to Bowling Green.

Diogo Pacheco and Tonny Temple lead the team with two goals each, while seven other players have registered a goal. Colin Biros has a team-high three assits, while Jason Shokalook has two. Will Meyer has started seven of their eight games this season with a 3-3-1 record, one shutout and 21 total saves.

TWICE IS NICE
Junior forward Mike Melaragni picked up his second MAC Player of the Week award this season. He earned the honors for posting a goal and an assist in WMU's 2-1 win over Bowling Green last week. Melaragni assisted on the opening goal to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead and then pushed the lead to 2-0 on the eventual game-winner. The Rochester, Mich., native leads the team with five goals and has scored in each of the last three games this season.

SENIOR DAY
Western Michigan will take time to honor its three seniors Pepe Martinez-Bertrand, Matheus Lima and Brendan Skinner.
