RICHMOND, K.Y. -- The Western Michigan golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of the Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky at University Club Golf Course at Arlington on Monday evening.
The Broncos shot an opening round of 312 and finished up with an improvement of 309 for the second round, currenting sitting at 621 (+45) overall. WMU is 13th out of 14 teams heading into Tuesday's final round. The hosts, EKU, lead with a 587 (+2), with Cincinnati in second place at 589 (+13).
"I thought we hung in there for our first 36-hole round of the year," said first-year head coach
Kim Moore. "I felt we left a lot of shots out on the course, but we definitely learned a lot and I expect us to go out tomorrow with a 'moving on up' mentality. There are always some positives to take out of our rounds even when they are not our best. I'm proud of our girls for battling the long day and giving me 100 percent of their effort."
Individually, junior
Brooke Gibbons led the team with a 153 (+9) after opening the day with a 76 and then shooting a 77 to close it out. Senior
Cameryn Lucia was WMU's second finisher on the day with a 155 (+11). The Grand Blanc, Mich., native opened the day with a 77 and shot a 78 in the second round. Sophomore
Alissa Fish opened the day with a 79 and improved to a 77 for her second round, shooting a 156 (+12). Fionah Khaing finished right behind her with a 157 (+13) after shooting an 80 to open and finishing with a 77.
Imogen Courtney rounded out WMU's competitors on the day with a 165 (+21) after shooting an 82 and an 83.
The final round begins on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
